Project Spotlight: Hidden Courtyard

The face of our client’s new home was hidden behind a monstrous fence that contained a steeply sloped walkway that no one could enjoy as it was hemmed in with overgrown conifers. We transplanted some of the best trees and removed everything else. The new timber retaining walls were placed behind the actual property line leaving an inviting right-of-way planting bed with artfully placed boulders to provide curb appeal year round. A few short steps now lead to a herringbone patterned inner courtyard with a few planting beds at-grade. A retaining wall bench holds the foundation bed and a trellis-topped fence encloses the courtyard delivering subtle privacy and opportunity for vines to climb. Exuberant plantings spill over the beds and colorful new pots and everything is watered by an unobtrusive and automatic drip irrigation system.
